How to Work the Nude Lip

September 17, 2011 | , , , , , , , , , ,
It's important to make the differentiation between a nude lip and swiping some extra foundation onto your lips and being done with it. Don't take the term 'nude lip' too literally, you're just after a bit of natural colour to your lips.

As with all lipstick colours and make up looks, the first step is finding a shade/colour that compliments your skin tone.
  • FAIR OR PALE SKIN: Avoid colours that could potentially wash you out, such as beige and light browns. Try to find a natural looking colour with pink, apricot or peach undertones. A lip stick in any of those shades will create a less dramatic 'nude lip' or is an alternative to a matte finish.
  • GOLD SKIN TONES: For all you ladies with golden undertones, check out warm beige or caramel lip colours.
  • OLIVE SKIN TONES: To all the ladies with olive skin tones, I'm jealous! Almost all natural lip colours will look amazing on you! If you want some extra pop, check out lip colours with  pink or coral undertones.
  • YELLOW UNDERTONES: If you skin has yellow undertones, stay away from cool toned colours. You want a warm toned lipstick.
  • DARK SKIN TONES: Nude lips look amazing on dark skin tones. However, natural browns, red browns and red toned colours work best.
As with any lipstick application, it's best to exfoliate your lips first. You don't need to have a special lip exfoliater for that, why not just try your toothbrush?

Sophie's tips for a great nude lip
  • Team your matte (or gloss, for that matter) nude lip with a matte foundation for extra emphasis
  • Opt for a natural glow for your cheeks (a light bronzer, pink or peach blush) for a more natural look
REMEMBER: You can go either way with this look. You can go for a dramatic eye or rock it with a nude eye look as well. Team your nude lip with a natural eyeshadow (optional) eyeliner and/or mascara for a more natural and relaxed look.

My favourite nude lip products are as follows
  • MAC Lip Glaze in Hue
  • MAC Lipliner in In Synch
  • Covergirl Natureluxe Gloss Balm in Sandstone
  • Revlon Colorburst in Rosy Nude
At the moment I'm loving using my MAC lip pencil in In Synch to line and fully colour my lips and applying my Revlon Lip Butter in Strawberry Shortcake over the top. There's a fine line with this look though. Too much of either product can be too pink and make me look a little over the top. In the situations, rubbing the products in with my ring finger helps distribute the product more evenly and remove excess.

I've also done some research and these seem to be the most sought after nude lip colours
  • MAC Creme D'Nude
  • MAC Playing Koi (from their Quite Cute collection)
  • MAC Myth
  • MAC Viva Glam Gaga
  • MAC Kinda Sexy
  • Maybelline Sensational in Nearly There
  • Revlon Nude Attitude
Alright ladies, it's up to you now. Please comment below with your tips and tricks for a nude lip, as well as your favourite lip products.

Always look your best,
Sophie
